Simplicity Historic Costumes 4739

Posted by Picasa

I made this sweet little dress for Miss 8. She loves to wear it. I used the now discontinued Simplicity Historic Costumes Pattern #4739, Civil War Growth Dress. The dress is made of cotton. For the elastic casing around the neckline, waist, and arms, I used bias tape. I also used the same color bias tape as a trim for the hem.

  1. what a lovely dress, you are so very clever.

to answer your question on my blog... most of my stitching is my own design but influenced by books or images on the web. i am a dreadful artist, very simplistic but i guess that lends itself nicely to childrens stitching. the girls just ask if they can stitch and we talk about what they want to make. mia stitched a mouse that i will post about tomorrow. very sweet and easy. they havent learnt how to blanket stitch or back stitch yet so their stitches are very basic. once they have finished stitching i blanket stitch around it and let them stuff it.
voila...little softie for them to give to someone they love.
you should try it, felt works the best.

  2. I love your lil girl dress too! this is a perfect everyday dress. My youngest daughter is into "old fashion" days. She would love knowing it was a Civil War costume!

  6. lovely dress! I love to see little girls in such outfits. I can only do really simple dress/blouses but I find it hard to follow patterns. So I can only cut & sew...& then re-sew!!
